Why Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a unique concept where anyone can laugh for no reason without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. It has been scientifically proven that the brain cannot differentiate between genuine or exercised laughter and if done with willingness, one can achieve the same physiological and psychological benefits.

We initiate laughter as an exercise in a group with eye contact and childlike playfulness, that soon turns into real, contagious laughter.

We need to laugh continuously for 10-15 minutes, loud and deep, coming from the diaphragm. It should be a belly laugh!

The word "Yoga" arises from the Sanskrit root "Yuj" which means to get hold of, integrate and harmonize. It means getting hold of our lives, harmonizing our bodies with our minds, spirits and society. Laughter Yoga incorporates Pranayama, the ancient science of yogic breathing, into laughter exercises. This has a powerful and immediate effect on our physiology and has been used for more than four thousand years to influence the body, mind and emotions.

The main characteristic of yogic breathing is that exhalation be longer than inhalation, thus ridding the lungs of residual air, which is then replaced by fresh air containing a higher level of oxygen. Because respiration becomes shallow with stress, we need to keep our lungs healthy by providing enough oxygen, taking deeper breaths. The secret is to exhale longer than you inhale! Try it!

Laughter Yoga goes beyond just laughter. With regular practice one can develop a positive mental attitude which will help one go through challenging times. It can also improve health and release negative thoughts and emotions.
